New York City has no shortage of art museums, from large to small and contemporary to classic. However, tucked away in the creative neighborhood of Tribeca is one of New York’s most unique and eye-catching: Mmuseumm. Mmuseumm is a modern natural history museum featuring collections of quirky items that are “overlooked, dismissed, or ignored”. Our luxury apartments in the Financial District of NYC bring you close to all that the Tribeca neighborhood holds and you will love getting to explore all that awaits at the museum.
The Museum in an Elevator Shaft
Mmuseumm is housed in a former freight elevator that opens out towards the street. At 36 square feet, the space is large enough to fit only a few visitors at a time and could be explored in a single afternoon. Curated by filmmakers Alex Kalman, Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie, whose offices are above the elevator shaft, Mmuseumm is funded by the purse mogul Kate Spade. It features carefully curated items in small exhibitions in rotating seasons. Mmuseumm 2, opened more recently, is an even smaller exhibit at 20 square feet. Both locations are open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays 12-6 and viewable 24/7 through the viewing window and the call-in audio tour.
Mmuseumm’s Object Journalism
Mmuseumm is currently exhibiting its Season 6, and features collections like “Looks Can Be Deceiving” (“objects that unintentionally caused the end of people’s lives”) and “Insect Chic” (“rebranding insects to appeal to the modern consumer”—for example, cricket flour pasta). Mmuseumm’s style is referred to as “object journalism”: commentary on modern society through objects, speaking to current events and materialistic culture. Mmuseumm 2 recently featured an exhibit called “Future Aleppo”: a model of the city built by the Syrian teenager Mohammed Qutaish, a refugee who hopes to become an architect someday.
