New York City is well-known for its catchy abbreviated neighborhood names. Over the decades, its diverse residents have developed labels for the city’s unique areas defined by their locations. One of the most distinctive neighborhoods is Tribeca, the artistic hub of Manhattan. Tribeca, often stylized as TriBeCa, stands for “the Triangle Below Canal Street.” Our Lower Manhattan apartments are located in the heart of the neighborhood and allow you access to amenities and upscale venues that you will love getting to explore. TriBeCa: “Triangle Below Canal Street”
Bordered by the Hudson River on the west and Broadway on the east, the “triangle” below Canal Street that makes up Tribeca is more of a trapezoid now. The name originated with the small block created by Church, Canal, and Lispenard Streets when the residents called themselves the Triangle Below Canal Street Block Association. In the 1970s, the New York Times used the term Tribeca to refer to the larger neighborhood area and the name caught on quickly.
History of Tribeca
Tribeca has not always been known for its trendy atmosphere - the neighborhood’s original core was a food market called the Washington Market, founded in the early 19th century. Later in the 19th century, Tribeca’s industrial focus shifted largely to textiles and dry goods. As SoHo became more commercialized in the 1970s, Tribeca began converting its large industrial buildings into residential buildings, creating loft apartments with a design unique to Tribeca and its architecture that attracted artists in need of studio space. The Triangle Below Canal Street expanded over time, becoming the trendy, artistic Tribeca neighborhood of today.
Tribeca is one of Manhattan’s most desirable and recognizable districts, known for its creative residents, 5-star restaurants and historical landmarks.
